Cooks hikes tobacco and drink tariffs

The Cook Islands parliament has approved an increase in tariffs on alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, cigarettes and tobacco.

Beer, wine and soft drink import duty rates have increased by 15 percent.

The import tax on light beer is up five percent while the increase on cigarettes and tobacco is 33 percent.

The new rates come into effect in a month.
