PNG's Belden Namah blames caretaker prime minister Peter O'Neill for election fiasco

Papua New Guinea's caretaker deputy prime minister, Belden Namah, has launched a scathing attack on the Prime Minister and the Electoral Commissioner over the state of the electoral rolls.

There are reports from across PNG about the poor state of the rolls with many names missing and Mr Namah says Peter O'Neill and Andrew Trawen should be held accountable.

Don Wiseman reports.

"Mr Namah, who made international headlines before the election storming into the Supreme Court to arrest the Chief Justice, had led the push to have the election delayed because of the state of the rolls. He wanted more time to get them in order. He says cabinet backed the delay call only for Mr O'Neill in collaboration with Mr Trawen and the Australian High Commissioner Ian Kemish to quash it. Mr Namah says reports have been pouring in showing the country was not ready. He asks why in the urban wards in his Vanimo seat up to 6,000 eligible voters are not on the roll. He says the Commission has failed to comply with the Organic Law by not having the roll ready. Mr Namah says there are more than 200 Australian advisors assisting the PNG Electoral Commission who have helped orchestrate the disaster. He wants less reliance on foreign advice and calls for a patriotic and nationalistic approach to solving such problems in the future."
