Vanuatu's acting police commissioner, Arthur Caulton, says a New Zealand man died early this morning in Port Vila hospital after a brawl outside a local nightclub.
Mr Caulton says they understand the man was working in Vanuatu and had been living in the country for some time.
He says the man, who has been named as Hanz Christian, was assaulted by a ni-Vanuatu man.
Mr Caulton says they are holding a man in custody but investigators are still to isolate what happened.
"It is still too early to confirm his particulars and how he died but as far as I know he was assaulted leading to his death at around 12 midnight last night."
