O'Neill tipped to secure PNG seat

As polling continues in Papua New Guinea's general election, counting has begun in at least one of the provinces where polling has already concluded.

Counting is underway for seats in the Southern Highlands including the Ialibu Pangia electorate in which the caretaker Prime Minister Peter O'Neill is on track for a big win.

Mr O'Neill is set to be elected on first count, having won about two-thirds of the vote in what will be the first clear result in this election.

Under PNG's preferential voting system, many of the 111 seats are expected to be decided on second and third preferences.

Counting was due to begin yesterday in the newly created Hela province where concerns over security around the counting have already delayed the process by a few days.
