Polling going smoothly in PNG's New Guinea Islands

6:00 pm on 2 July 2012

Polling for Papua New Guinea's general election has been progressing smoothly in the New Guinea Islands' provinces.

Polling began in New Ireland, Manus, East New Britain and West New Britain the weekend before last, and Bougainville six days ago.

Weather conditions have caused some delays to the polling over the intervening period but electoral officials have reported that polling in this region is on track to finish in the next few days.

The incumbent in New Ireland's Namatanai Open seat, Byron Chan, says polling across the province has been peaceful.

"There have been no reports of any incidents. Maybe a bit of harassment here and there, but that's expected. Overall, incident-free. Names missing from rolls is the common thing now, that's the problem."

Electoral officials say that polling is expected to be completed in all provinces by Friday July 6.
