The Secretariat of the Pacific Community says appropriate legislation must be introduced by Pacific Island nations to tackle cyber-crime.
The SPC's Pacific Information Communications Technology outreach programme is warning that most Pacific countries are not well equipped to tackle computer-related crime.
The Manager of the programme, Siaosi Sovaleni, says a common issue is the under-reporting of illegal activities either because they are not considered a crime, or there is a lack of capacity to deal with them.
He says there is a need for modern legislation to combat the problem.
"We have recently completed briefing and profile-ments around the Pacific whereby we talk to the legislators about some of the emerging issues like cyber-crime, cyber safety and so on forth, raising awareness of the need to actually have appropriate legislation in place to deal with some of these issues."
Siaosi Sovaleni says at present only Tonga has legislation against cyber-crime.
