Rain delays PNG vote counting

4:06 pm on 4 July 2012

Rainy weather has this afternoon forced the suspension of counting for the Papua New Guinea province of Southern Highlands until tomorrow.

Latest preliminary results show that in the provincial seat, William Powi, leads with nearly double the votes of Joseph Kobol.

Elections in the autonomous region of Bougainville are nearing completion and preparations are being made for counting.

The exceptions are the atoll communities of Carterets, Mortlock and Tasman, where a delay is mostly down to the lack of a vessel to transport election officials from the Bougainville mainland.

But a ship is due in Buka from Madang tomorrow.

Polling is also still being conducted in remote parts of North Bougainville and should be completed by tomorrow.
