The former Chief Executive Officer of the Vanuatu business, Northern Islands Stevedoring Company Limited, or NISCOL, has been sentenced to two years in jail for unlawful assembly and police obstruction.

Kalvau Moli was given the penalty in the Luganville Supreme Court yesterday, following an incident last year when he and ten other people stopped police and a member of the Commission of Inquiry from entering the premises of NISCOL.

The company, which is owned by the provincial governments of northern Vanuatu, has been investigated by the commission over allegations of misappropriation by Moli and the Board of Directors.

Moli, who is the national treasurer of the opposition Union of Moderate Parties led by Serge Vohor, was to contest the elections in October.

The electoral office says under the election laws he will be disqualified.
