The Speaker of the Tonga Legislative Assembly, Lord Lasike, has been convicted of illegally possessing ammunition.

The Chief Justice Michael Scott has fined him 280 US dollars, payable within 14 days.

Radio Tonga says in announcing his decision, Justice Scott said the accounts given by Lord Lasike and his wife, Sandra, were found to be untruthful.

The ammunition was found in a room in Lord Lasike's motel, Sandyboyz.

Lord Lasike says he will appeal against his conviction.
