In Papua New Guinea's general election, the Triumph Heritage Empowerment Party's Delilah Gore has extended her lead in vote counting for the Sohe Open seat.

Ms Gore is leading the Northern Province seat with 2814 votes, more than a thousand more than Independent Henry Amuli.

At this stage, she is the only woman to be leading in any of the 111 seats, although counting is yet to begin in about 20 electorates.

Another female candidate, Mary Kamang of the People's National Congress party, is in second place in early counting for the Madang Provincial seat, behind the incumbent Sir Arnold Amet.

There are a record number of female candidates standing in this election - 134 - but that figure is only about four percent of the total number of candidates.
