PNG political leader, Don Polye, praises conduct of election

7:46 pm on 16 July 2012

The leader of Papua New Guinea's Triumph Heritage Empowerment, or THE, party says that the election has been well conducted by electoral officials and security forces despite some hiccups.

Vote counting is now in full swing in most provinces after three weeks of polling to choose a new 111-member parliament concluded at the weekend.

However reports of attempts by some candidates to disrupt the process during polling have extended to counting.

The THE Party's Don Polye says overall the election has pulled through well.

"There's been some challenges brought on upon the Electoral Commission and also the security forces. The challenges were not easy. They were difficult. some of them even complicated. But those were circumstances brought upon by unprecedented events at the political level."

The THE party is currently leading counting in 12 seats, with only the People's National Congress, with 17, on more.
