Tongan MPs to resume debate on vote of no confidence in govt

4:22 am on 17 July 2012

Tongan MPs are expected to resume debate today on a motion for a vote of no confidence in the government of Prime Minister, Lord Tu'ivakano.

The motion has been brought by Akilisi Pohiva's Democratic Party but so far the government has managed to stave off a vote.

They got a two week deferral earlier this month along with a directive that MPs seek the views of their electorate.

Last Friday one MP, Democratic Party member, Tongatapu Number 7's Sangster Saulala, used public opposition to the motion to justify accepting a position in Cabinet.
