Sport: Chris Amini to captain PNG in cricket series

10:56 am on 17 July 2012

Chris Amini will captain the PNG Barramundi's in this week's four team limited overs cricket tournament in Port Moresby.

Amini steps up in the absence of long-term skipper Rarua Dikana, with selectors taking the opportunity to blood a handful of players from the Under 19 team, who have a world cup next month.

The Barramundi's will play one day and Twenty20 matches against Singapore, Hong Kong and a Brisbane/Gold Coast selection from Thursday until Sunday.

The General Manager for Cricket PNG, Greg Campbell, says Amini was the obvious choice to lead the team.

"Chris in the last six months has come along leaps and bounds. He's now working in the office as our media relations officer and he's in charge of Digara Diggers, who made the 50 over final, and Chris has shown great leadership on and off the field so we thought he's a great replacement for Rarua in this tournament and we've got no doubt Chris will go a long way to be showing the right way to lead."

Among the youngsters included are Amini's younger brother, CJ Amini Junior, and Chad Sobers, who was born in PNG but grew up in Sydney, where he plays first grade cricket.
