A 21 million US dollar solar power scheme, the first large scale renewable energy project in Samoa, has been dedicated.
Solar Samoa Limited, a private local company, has installed solar panels at Faleolo Airport under a 15 year lease with the government.
A statement from the company says when completed in two years, their solar project will produce about 4 megawatts of electricity for the Electric Power Corporation grid.
This is expected to generate savings of 300 thousand US dollars annually on the utility's fuel bill.
A company director, Oloipola Terence Betham, says they are hoping for a 25 year lease from the government for use of Faleolo Airport for the solar farm.
