Trial of former Fiji Prime Minister on fraud charges underway

8:33 am on 20 July 2012

The trial of Fiji's ousted Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase on fraud related charges will continue today after Fiji's Independent Commission Against Corruption presented its case yesterday.

Mr Qarase had initially sought a permanent stay of proceedings and when this was dismissed his lawyers made an application for no case to answer.

This too was rejected by the High Court judge and the case, which involves allegations dating back nearly 20 years to when Mr Qarase was with Fiji Holdings Ltd, got underway.

Mr Qarase has been charged with six counts of abuse of office and three counts of improperly discharging his duty with respect to a property in which he has a private interest.

Mr Qarase defence opens today .

His lawyers are to call six witnesses, including one who will present evidence through a videio linkup from Britain.
