Medical specialists at Fiji hospital withholding services in contract dispute

7:29 pm on 26 July 2012

About 20 medical specialists from Suva Private Hospital in Fiji are in negotiations with their employer over a contract dispute.

The employees, who include surgeons, gynaecologists, anaesthetists and obstetricians have been refusing to carry out elective surgery since the start of this month and are only doing emergency procedures.

A solicitor representing the specialists, Jone Bale says they are unhappy with the salaries offered but cannot disclose the detail of negotiations with their employer.

"At this stage it would be premature to start putting this out to the public because we are at a delicate stage of negotiations with the Suva Private Hospital. And we would rather negotiate these issues with them directly."

Jone Bale says he is hoping both parties can reach an agreement over the next few weeks.
