Work on the world's first underwater resort in Fiji's Lau Group is to begin once funding is secured.

A United States company, Triton Submarines is undertaking the project to build The Poseidon off Katafanga Island.

The company's President of Sales and Marketing Mark Deppe told the Fiji Times newspaper that once long term finances are confirmed, construction will start on the project.

Initial announcements by Triton Submarines revealed the company proposes to build 22 550 square metre guest rooms, an underwater restaurant and bar facilities in the world's first permanent one-atmosphere seafloor structure inside a lagoon adjacent to the island.
