Police in French Polynesia have extended by one day the arrest period of eight customs officials accused of raping a female colleague.

Radio reports say they are being questioned over the alleged rape as well as their failure to report a crime which is said to have been committed on a customs ship in April.

The woman in question is being described as a recent arrival from France and the first woman to work on the ship.

The custom office's management has issued a statement, saying there will be the harshest punishment on an administrative level, should the claims be proven.
