Fiji media urged to raise awareness about constitutional process

Fiji's constitution commission chair, Professor Yash Ghai, has called for more effort from the media to raise awareness about the constitution-making process.

The interim government's ministry of information quotes Professor Ghai saying it needs the media to focus on the commission's work, create more awareness and encourage greater participation.

The ministry says his call has come after poor media turnouts at some of the organisation's briefings.

The ministry of Information's permanent secretary, Sharon Smith-Johns, says it is vital the media are fully engaged in informing and creating awareness.

Another commissioner, Professor Satendra Nandan, says the media can inspire and encourage people to be a part of the process.

Mrs Jill Ghai has co-authored a guide called 'Building the People's Constitution: Your Responsibility' and it covers issues the public and the media will need to look out during the submissions.
