Tight security is in place in Suva as Fiji's ousted prime minister Laisenia Qarase is to be sentenced in the High Court today after being found guilty of corruption related charges last Tuesday.

Qarase has been convicted on six charges of abuse of office, and three charges relating to discharge of duty as a public servant, dating back to the 1990s.

The case sparked public interest with dozens of people turning up for the final phases of the trial.

The prosecution wants the 72-year-old jailed for failing to show remorse while the defence has called for a non-custodial sentence on health grounds.

Qarase's convcition is seen as a victory for the interim regime whose leader staged a military coup six years ago alleging widespread corruption in government.
