French Polynesia's dominant Maohi Protestant church has called for the territory's reinscription on the UN decolonisation list.
After a week-long seminar, the church has given its support to the bid repeatedly put forward by the ruling Tavini Huiraatira Party but rejected by France.
The church says the relisting would be an efficient way to protect the territory's heritage.
It says it would also allow it to demand that France clean up the nuclear waste it has left after 30 years of weapons testing.
The church leadership says it is faith that will save the people whose soul has been manipulated for a long time.
It also says it is not a decision about independence but the people will make its decision about its sovereignty when the time has come.
