CNMI's attorney general resigns

4:20 am on 14 August 2012

In the Northern Marianas, Edward Buckingham has resigned as the Commonwealth's attorney general effective immediately.

The governor's press secretary Angel Demapan says Benigno Fitial accepted the resignation, and appointed lawyer Viola Alepuyo as acting attorney general.

Mr Demapan says Mr Buckingham cited personal and medical reasons for resigning.

This comes about a week after Mr Buckingham rescinded his original resignation notice.

Mr Buckingham is the subject of a bench warrant after he failed to show up in court despite being served a penal summons in connection with criminal charges filed by the Office of the Public Auditor against him.
