China to handover Nuku'alofa Central Business District projects to Tonga

10:41 am on 15 August 2012

China will officially handover the Nuku'alofa Central Business District projects to the government of Tonga today, marking their completion.

The projects include the Tungi Colonnade, the renovation of the Royal Palace, the Vuna Wharf and civil works including road and drainage repairs and a new carpark.

The Matangi Tonga reports a handover ceremony is being held in the CBD for all projects, which have been financed by a 67 million US dollar loan from China.

The CEO of the Nuku'alofa Port Authority, Mosese Lavemai, says although the Vuna Wharf is complete, no date has been set for when it will be opened.

He says a separate opening ceremony for the wharf will be held and the government is due to confirm a date.

The Vuna wharf is under the Ports Authority, the body that controls all harbours in the capital.
