The Fiji interim minister for Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment says the ministry will endeavour to implement a final Wages Regulation Order despite the apparent resignation of the Chairperson of the Wages Council.
The Minister, Jone Usamate, says he has not received a formal notice of resignation from Father Kevin Barr although Father Barr has told local media he has resigned in protest at the deferral of wage increases.
Mr Usamate says the submissions process has been completed on the 10 proposed wage regulation orders and he is now awaiting the Wages Council to consider these submissions before it complete its final recommendations.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation has told local media that some employers had opposed the wage regulations because some of the proposed pay rises were unreasonable.
The Fiji Labour Party has commended the actions of Father Kevin Barr.
