A leading women's advocate in Vanuatu, Jenny Ligo, says about 18 women are expected to contest the elections at the end of October.
Mrs Ligo says she will be among this number, standing as an independent candidate in the six-seat Port Vila constituency.
The current 52 seat Vanuatu Parliament has just the one woman MP, Eta Rory.
