Fiji's Constitution Commission may call for extra time for 'enormous' task

7:29 am on 22 August 2012

The Chairman of Fiji's Constitution Commission, Yash Ghai, says it may need extra time to hear the views of people in Fiji on the new constitution.

The Commission has moved from Suva to Nadi to hear people's views.

Professor Ghai says public hearings are going very well, with a big turnout in Nadi and almost 300 submissions received so far.

"We are working very hard to try to meet the deadlines but we also know that our task is enormous. It's a very intense period and it's entirely possible that we shall need a little bit more time."

Professor Ghai says the Commission will be in the country's western region for about three weeks.
