PNG bans foreign journalists entering to cover Manus asylum seeker centre

12:52 pm on 24 August 2012

Papua New Guinea's government has placed a temporary ban on all foreign journalists entering the country to cover issues around Australia's plans for offshore processing of asylum seekers in Manus province.

Officials from Australia and PNG have been discussing arrangements for the reopening of a detention facility on Manus island after Canberra last week passed legislation to revisit the offshore processing policy.

PNG's cabinet is understood to have approved the reopening of the Manus facility yesterday.

The Director-General of Immigration, Mataio Rabura, has issued instructions to all PNG's overseas missions to not facilitate visas for journalists planning to come to the country and cover the Manus story.
