Bans possible after heightened fire risk on Niue

The Niue National Disaster Council is considering issuing a fire ban on the island.

This follows three months of low rainfall and a prediction of further months of dry weather.

The head of the council, Secretary to Government Richard Hipa, says residents are being asked not to light fires in plantations or around houses.

Following a recent accident with a airport fire rescue vehicle Niue has only one fire engine at the airport and the council says it cannot be used for fires outside the airport confines.

The southern oscillation of El Nino is warming the seas in the area and this is increasing the chances of cyclones during the November to May period.
