New Zealand and the European Union are to host a Pacific energy summit next April.
The New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister, Murray McCully, says the summit will aim to achieve what he calls 'a quantum leap forward' in the implementation of clean and affordable energy and a reduction in fossil fuel use.
Mr McCully says Pacific countries have made considerable progress in the past 12 months towards energy independence and they are aiming to maintain this momentum.
He says, with New Zealand's help, the Cook Islands and Tuvalu are aiming to generate 100 per cent of their electricity from renewable sources by 2020, while Tokelau aims to be close to that by the end of this year.
