A Papua New Guinea police officer, who allegedly assaulted a school headmaster for sending his son home because the boy was not wearing the school uniform, has been charged and suspended from duty.
His immediate superior, the commander of the Hohola Police Station in Port Moresby and another officer have also been suspended.
The Post Courier newspaper reports the policeman was charged with assault and had appeared in court, with the matter adjourned until the 24th of this month.
A police spokesperson says the action of the officer, who was in full uniform, assaulting a member of the public was unwarranted, especially a teacher trying to enforce discipline at the school.
The spokesperson says the other suspensions are an attempt to restore public confidence in the Hohola Police Station which has been hit with a number of serious allegations.
He says these officers are spoiling the image of the entire force.
