Vote of no confidence into Solomons' leader likely next week

1:19 pm on 7 September 2012

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo is set to face a no-confidence vote when Parliament meets for the first time this year next Friday.

The Solomon Star reports the Opposition office submitted notice of the motion to Parliament on Thursday, and it is likely to be debated two days before Prince William and his wife Catherine arrived in Honiara on the 16th of September.

A parliamentary spokesperson says the motion has been set in the order paper.

The Opposition is still to make public its reasons for the motion but the Prime Minister says he welcomes it and is confident it will be defeated on the floor of Parliament.

The paper reports Mr Lilo saying the motion is nothing but a waste of time because his government is intact.

He says if the motion is defeated or withdrawn, he will demand that the Opposition leader Dr Derek Sikua resign.
