Recent rainfall in Niue has eased the worries of officials after months of dry weather, but a fire ban on the island could still be necessary.
The Niue National Disaster Council has asked residents not to light fires in plantations or around houses after three months of low rainfall.
The head of the council, Secretary to Government Richard Hipa, says rainfall in the past week has been a positive development, but it still may not be enough.
"We will still monitor the alert on the dry weather situation. If, in the event that the drought and dry weather situation will continue and worsen, compared to the last two weeks, then a fire ban submission will be submitted to Cabinet for Cabinet's consideration."
Richard Hipa says there is the possibility of additional rain over the next couple of days.
