Royal visit prompts unprecedented media onslaught on Solomons

9:34 am on 15 September 2012

This weekend's visit by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Solomon Islands has prompted an unprecedented media onlsaught on the country.

At least 80 journalists are to accompany Prince William and his wife Catherine during their day and night stay in the capital Honiara, as well as a trip to Eastern Guadalcanal.

Our correspondent in Honiara, Dorothy Wickham, says reporters have already started arriving, creating shortages in many services.

"Oh lord, I tell you, there's no more hire cars in town, I've got TV stations calling me up asking me to help them find cars to hire and drivers and I said, we've gone back to the Festival of Arts here again where we've got no more hire cars left. I mean, Honiara will never ever again see this kind of media entourage here. I'd say it's going to give them quite a shock. The local people won't know what's hit them."
