More than 25-thousand Fiji households, businesses, schools and places of worship will benefit from a government decision to waive debts they owe to the Water Authority for years of unpaid water and sewerage bills.
In a statement the interim government says it is forgiving 8 million US dollars in unpaid bills, a decision it says will benefit about 100-thousand Fijians.
The Bainimarama Government says some customers simply cannot afford to pay their outstanding bills.
The government says the let off will be on a case by case assessment, with
customers having a 3 month window from the beginning of October to make contact with The Water Authority to discuss their cases.
