Fiji Police are urging families of five prison escapees and members of the public to come forward with any information that may lead to their recapture.

The inmates from the Medium Corrections Facility in Naboro, near Suva, escaped on Monday night.

The Fiji Times online reports the acting chief of police operations Senior Superintendent Rusiate Tudravu has warned it is a criminal offence to harbour any escaped prisoner.

Mr Tudravu says anyone caught harbouring escapees faces up to seven years in jail.

He says police believe the escapees are being assisted by members of the public.
