Calls for Britain to give bilateral aid to small island states - Solomons MP

A former Solomon Islands prime minister is calling on Britain to give bilateral aid to small island developing states.

Danny Philip, who is now a opposition back bencher, says in the past Britain had given bilateral aid to small developing countries, but has cut back substantially.

Mr Philip wants the Solomon Islands prime minister, Gordon Darcy Lilo to raise this issue during the UN General Assembly Meeting in New York.

"Britain has move tremendously out of the bilateral system of giving aid to small island countries. We must re-emphasise to the Commonwealth leaders that Britain must start to give bilateral aid programme again to small island states and small developing island states."

Danny Philip says the aid must be separate to what Britain gives under its European Union commitments.
