Five die in New Caledonia car crash

Five people have died in a car crash in New Caledonia in the early hours of Sunday.

The convertible hit a wall in a Noumea neighbouthood and caught fire.

The vehicle had been seen being driven at excessive speed before the crash.

An identity card found at the crash site shows one of the victims was from Houailou on the east coast of the main island.

The road toll in New Caledonia this year has risen to 43.

Per capita, four times more people die on New Caledonian roads than in France.
