8:18 am on 17 October 2012

A resolution impeaching Northern Marianas Governor Benigno Fitial for 16 allegations of felony, corruption and neglect of duty will be put to a vote at the House of Representatives today.

However the chair of the Special Committee on Impeachment, Representative Joe Deleon Guerrero has expressed disappointment with the move.

Mr Deleon Guerrero says the Committee had requested an extension till Friday so it could complete its report and recommendation to the full House.

But House Speaker Eli Cabrera did not grant the extension informing local media he gave the committee a month to do its job.

Mr Deleon Guerrero says the House speaker announced last month he would grant an extension if the committee asks for it.

Joe Deleon Guerrero and other minority members say Mr Cabrera is just following the governor's and the Republican Party's orders to hold a session today.

He also adds the governor's party has been mobilizing its supporters to go to Capital Hill today for the impeachment vote.

The House minority leader has asked the Legislative Bureau to request police presence at the Legislature during the session.
