Sport: Lam says Samoa can compete with European big guns

The former Manu Samoa captain Pat Lam says next month's tour to the Northern Hemisphere is a big chance for the national team to lift it's world ranking.

Lam was asked by head coach Stephen Betham to help out as an attack coach and mentor to the team, during next month's internationals against Canada, Wales and France.

He says the team is certainly capable of causing some upsets.

"There's some quality players there and, at the moment, Samoa sits tenth in the world rankings and, as everyone knows, when they do the world cup draw and the seedings that top eight is crucial in December and I think by calculations if we can win two of the three games we've got a real chance of slipping into the top eight so it's a big challenge and certainly Wales and France are the two form teams in the Northern Hemisphere at the moment but something that Samoa looks forward to."
