The Ulu of Tokelau says the territory may still have to use diesel fuel in emergencies after it becomes 100% solar powered.

The last of the three stages of the Tokelau Renewable Energy Project, which will replace its diesel powered generators, is expected to be finished by the end of this month.

Kelisiano Kalolo says there are still challenges being faced.

"We are looking at some, for emergencies, maybe we still need diesel. And then maybe we will be making some plans for when diesel will phase out."

The Ulu of Tokelau says the territory is also exploring the possibility of using coconut oil as an emergency fuel.
