Confusion over Cook Islands branding draws mixed reaction

Plans to help fix a confusion held by some New Zealanders over the Cook Islands as a destination aren't being welcomed by everyone.

A recent survey by Cook Islands Tourism in New Zealand found that many New Zealanders don't make the connection between the Cook Islands and Rarotonga, and some think the main island is a part of Tonga.

The company plans to change the way it advertises the destination so that the name Cook Islands will become more prominent.

But the managing director of Rarotongan Beach Resort and Spa, Tata Crocombe, says the confusion isn't necessarily damaging to tourism there.

"What is does say is that it's going to be easier for us to speak directly to the New Zealand consumer if we talk about Rarotonga rather than the Cook Islands. Focussing in on Rarotonga, which is the bigger brand name, just makes marketing sense."

Tata Crocombe says New Zealanders have a tendency to stay in Rarotonga and not explore the outer islands like Aitutaki, where his company also has a property.
