Nauru Government disputes report of another suicide attempt at detention camp

5:16 pm on 25 October 2012

The Nauru Government says claims of another suicide attempt at the asylum seeker detention camp on the island are wrong.

The Australia based Refugee Action Coalition says an Iranian man attempted to take his own life before being rescued by guards and fellow detainees.

Its spokesperson, Ian Rintoul, says it is the fourth attempted suicide on Nauru in the five weeks since Canberra opened the camp there.

But Nauru Government spokesperson Rod Henshaw says the claim is incorrect.

"There were 3 incidents, self harm incidents a week or two ago. There was a report that there was a further one this week on Tuesday involving an Iranian. That report is not true and there is no knowledge of any other incidents. In fact it is fairly quiet up at the camp at the present time with no incidents occurring."

Rod Henshaw also contradicts Mr Rintoul's claim that up to seven people are now on a hunger strike.

He says just one person had been refusing food.
