Sport: Solomon Islands a different side four years on

9:38 am on 3 November 2012

The Solomon Islands are keen to show they're no longer the whipping boys when they open their Futsal World Cup campaign in Thailand this evening.

The Kurukuru conceded 69 goals at the last world cup four years ago, including a 31-2 drubbing by Russia, who they meet again tonight.

Captain Elliot Rogomo says the team is better for that experience.

"It was the first time we'd gone to the world cup - I was only 16 years old that time - we were really kids. There was no experience and there's a lot of things we need to learn in all stages in 2008. What I've learnt is just to grow as a player because 2008 was a different level of futsal, compared to Oceania. To just go from amateur to professional level is a different class so 2008 was just a very learning point for us and in the past years have shown how we've come."

Following the Russia game the Solomon's will also take on Colombia and Guatemala in pool play.
