CNMI petition against Sablan seen as sign of desperation

The Democratic Party in the Northern Marianas says a Republican petition against its Congressman is an act of desperation ahead of this week's election.

The Republican Party's Juan Tenorio is leading a petition that asks the US Attorney for Guam and the Northern Marianas to probe Congressman Greg Kilili Sablan's alleged past drug use.

The petition asks for a criminal investigation into allegations that Mr Sablan participated in drug dealing and trafficking in the CNMI.

A former Lieutenant Governor Diego Benavente says the petition is a smear campaign just days before Tuesday's election, and says voters know better than to fall for it.

Mr Sablan, who has never been arrested for any drug offence, says he struggled with alcohol and drug use earlier in his life, but gave it all up in 1995.
