The French Polynesian president has issued a public statement to dispel what he calls a number of rumours.

With elections due next year, Oscar Temaru says there has to be a stop to saying whatever one pleases as this has been going on for years.

Walter Zweifel reports.

"In a presidential statement, Oscar Temaru says he is not a dual French/New Zealand citizen and until his country is independent, he will only have a French passport. Mr Temaru says he has no villa in Hawaii, no ranch in Australia and no mansion in New Zealand, but has been living in the same house in Faaa for 25 years. He says he has no bank account abroad nor any interest in a foreign company, but is all invested at home. Amid a recent probe over alleged corruption involving businesses and unions, Mr Temaru says he has absolutely no role, adding he never accepted a single franc to change his politics."
