Vanuatu election officer demands apology over claim on radio

3:27 pm on 7 November 2012

Vanuatu's Principal Electoral Officer Lionel Kaluat has demanded a public apology from a local radio station after a member of the public claimed on a talk back show that he had built a house with funding from farmers in New Zealand and Australia.

Mr Kaluat is also the Commissioner of Labour and is responsible for the Recognised Season Employer Scheme in New Zealand and Australia's Pacific Workers Scheme.

But Mr Kaluat says to build his house he took out a bank loan and the accusation is a baseless one that has damaged his public standing.

Mr Kaluat has given the radio station seven days to apologise or he says he will sue for defamation.
