American Samoa voters against veto override

3:32 pm on 8 November 2012

Voters in American Samoa have rejected a proposal that would have allowed a constitutional amendment giving the legislature the power to override the governor's veto of legislation.

A referendum on the proposal was included in process of this week's elections of a governor, members of the legislature and a representative to the United States congress.

Our correspondent in Pago Pago, Monica Miller, says people have told her they didn't really understand what the referendum was for.

"There was really no public education programme to discuss the pros and cons of the veto override referendum. The legislature was discussing plans to try and get some public education going on in the villages and also on public television and radio but really there was nothing."
