One Billion Rising campaign wins Pacific support

4:50 pm on 14 November 2012

Fiji and several other Pacific countries are joining the One Billion Rising campaign against violence against women.

The campaign will see people around the world demonstrate in various ways in February about the one in three women globally, who will be raped or beaten in her lifetime.

One of the Pacific organisers, Roshika Deo, says several countries in the region are already signed up to hold events.

"Depending on the security situation in their country. In Fiji, we are anticipating for people to, on the day, get together in central Suva somewhere and do a strike, do a protest, do a march, dance, do what anyone is comfortable with to initiate the revolution against violence against women and girls."

Roshika Deo says the group plans to have resources available in about a month so people can start planning how they will demonstrate.
