Guam residents urged to recycle

9:14 am on 19 November 2012

Guam's Environmental Protection Agency is pushing for more people on the island to recycle.

Local residents produce slightly more rubbish per day than the average American and recycle only half as much.

But the Guam Environmental Protection Agency says recycling is gaining ground.

Tammy Jo Anderson-Taft of the Agency says Guam is only 200 square miles and anytime there are rubbish issues it affects everyone on the island.

"So this is obiviously a really critical issue for us and we have issues with illegal dumping and enforcement of our solid waste rules and regulations and things like that but the more people aware of recycling and what they can do and what they can easily do to reduce the amount of trash they are making, the better chance of controlling amount landfill space that we need they illegal dumping issues we have."

Tammy Jo Anderson-Taft says there are now recycling education courses run by the local University and Community College.

She says students of thoses programmes go out and run community awareness workshops on the envivronment and also recycling.
