Sato Kilman retains the prime ministership in Vanuatu

4:29 pm on 19 November 2012

Vanuatu's parliament has elected the People's Progress Party leader Sato Kilman as the Prime Minister.

He beat the other nominee Edward Natapei, the leader of parliament's largest party, the Vanua'aku Pati, by 29 votes to 23.

The country's tenth legislature began sitting this morning, almost three weeks since the general election returned Vanuatu's most fragmented parliament ever.

Before electing a Prime Minister, MPs first voted George Wells from Mr Kilman's party as the Speaker.
